Things I can never have - Workers Floral Warden Parka

While curating the Tumblr I came across this pretty little piece. The garment is made by a Japanese label called Workers and get this, it’s handmade to order. Constructed using 5.2oz cotton and flax (which is derived from the flax plant or, as it is sometimes called, linseed). Worker suggest ordering a size bigger than your usual because the jacket is washed to finish it. I am seriously in awe, I mean, it’s made by hand and has this great print. I love the contrast between the orange, blue and green and the nice big pockets. It does conjure up images of the latest Supreme collection, especially the hoodie but if I’m being honest I’d prefer this. At 27100 JPY (which is about £200) you’d be hard pressed to find another jacket of this quality at that price.

I tried a direct translation (cough google) to see if there was any other information about it. This is what I got:
花柄パーカーにコバートのベーカーショーツ。  やはりこちらは夏です。上下共に薄く、織りが粗いのである程度風を通します。  やはりTシャツの上にこんな羽織り物が夏らしいのではないでしょうか。
Baker floral shorts Covert to Parker. This is still summer. The thin, both up and down through the wind to some extent, because the coarse weave. What is not it went her summery things like this still on top of the T-shirt.
If you want to make me jealous for the rest of my life hop on over to their website and check out their other wares.

This is what the jacket looks like on.

UU x Uniqlo collaboration now live

The much anticipated collaboration between Jun Takahashi’s Undercover label and Japanese super retailer, Uniqlo has been released in the UK. The collection went live for people to buy at midnight and I’m very impressed by what I’ve seen. There’s an easiness about the collection and there’s also an edge that is no doubt inspired by Takahashi’s work with Undercover. There’s a lot of cropped pants that are ideal for the warming weather, there’s a lot of interesting play with shapes and patterns (see the shirting) and in line with Uniqlo’s usual aesthetic - a really great range of colours.

I’m hoping that this partnership continues because as with Jil Sander’s work with the company I’m guessing that the best is yet to come. I hope that Takahashi takes more of a risk and we’ll hopefully see some of the more unique designs he’s done play a part in future collections. Take a look at a few of the choice pieces that I like below and peep the full collection at Uniqlo.

COMME des GARÇONS SHIRT x Supreme now at Dover Street Market

The new collaboration between Comme des Garcons and Supreme is now available. Unfortunately, and to my chagrin, the hoodies are sold out, the shirts are far too expensive for me and the t-shirts seem a bit of a cop out to me. I’m feeling the hats though, and they’re quite cheap especially compared to some of the other items in the collection. Check the items out below.

Adam Kimmel goes all Hawaiian

Check out these cool pieces from Adam Kimmel over at Porvocacao. Very different from all the other brighter designs you’ll see nowadays this is a welcome variation on a trend that is making a very big comeback. I especially dig the trousers.

On my list - SASQUATCHfabrix Eototo Flower Panel Shirt

I’m not going to bore you with the whole ‘y’all know I loves me some floral fabrics’ spiel because you all know how much I’m into my patterns and clothes that are so loud they can’t be worn in museums, so we’ll skip that.

Anyway, I was perusing jamesmcnally and came across this shirt. It’s by a Japanese brand called SASQUATCHfabrix who churn out some of the most maddeningly amazing stuff I’ve ever seen, but what else apart from praise can you give the Japanese? They are constantly somehow marrying the more refined aesthetic with psychedelic patterns and shapes and they play with proportion in a way that makes that you have to be pretty damn near exactly the same as the models that wear their clothes to pull it off. It’s both frustrating and amazing at the same time. They’ve recently been collaborating with another Japanese brand called The Inoue Brothers and from what I’ve seen of that it’s pretty darned cray (in the best way).

Seriously, this shirt is an amalgamation, a fusion, a marriage, the offspring of everything I love. It’s a button down, one. It looks like it has some weight to it, I’m assuming it’s cotton. It’s quirky in that just the sleeve is patterned. But the thing I love most, especially on the off-white variant - the pattern itself. It looks like it’s been painted onto the fabric with watercolour, the colours are delicate and feminine in a way which is a contrast to the masculinity of the rest of the garment. I absolutely adore this shirt.

I also tracked down another piece they did that I dig. It’s this varsity-esque piece that sets itself apart with it’s unique combination of materials. An outer constructed with this midnight blue wool, cowhide leather sleeves and gold quilting on the inside. Such an odd mix but it so works.

Jil Sander SS12

So this and a few other goodies popped into the ol’ inbox the other day. It’s funny to think that this is Raf Simons penultimate collection for Jil Sander, after he stated he would be ‘leaving Milan, forever’. Known for revitalising couture shapes and, at times, credited for starting the trend for bright colours and bringing them to the line that Jil is once again going to head. He has been rumoured to be heading to Dior (after John Galliano was very publicly denounced for his behaviour and ousted from the couturier) and still owns his own eponymous line in Antwerp where he’s from. I’m very excited to see where he goes from here.

I’m very happy to give you a look at the latest offerings for SS from Jil Sander at LN-CC. I’m very impressed with the selection and it cements in my mind that Raf has one of the more discerning eyes in the industry when it comes to fabrics, shape and proportion. I’m a fan of both Jil and Raf as individuals because they did something very different with their designs, emphasizing simplicity which I love. The collection boasts a number of tailored garments such as the pleated Tyson short and trouser. One of my favourite pieces is the python print t-shirt, a welcome change from all the camo and floral we’ve been seeing. The colours are quite muted from what I’ve seen from Raf at Jil but needless to say the colours are right on the money with splashes of yellow and a fantastic salmon jacket.

New York Fashion Week in 5 minutes

Have a look at this great video done by Liam Goslett of gaws and liamsawthis fame. He and a group of other menswear bloggers including Noah Emrich and Lawrence Schlossman descended upon the shows and managed to capture and create some really great content covering what happened on the streets and in the shows.
This is the entirety of my week. New York Fashion Week in 5 minutes. 3600 digital frames. Everything I saw from the street. There’s no shows, just the streets. This is all of it. Whipping by at 1/125th of a second, which is my usual shutter speed. This is how fast I saw things, and this is how fast you get to see it.
It’s so great. Hopefully, during my time in Long Beach I can save up and hitch a flight with my trusty camera and shoot street style at the next NYFW. Fingers crossed.

Grab your cards - Ann Demeulemeester

I have a serious hard spot for Belgian designer, Ann Demeulemeester. As part of the Antwerp 6 she is known for her radical and forward thinking designs. I’m not planning to go into to much detail about her but I’ll let the item I’m gonna show you do the talking.

As part of the ongoing Grab Your Cards feature I present to you a pair of shockingly reduced Ann Demeulemeester cap toe oxfords at myhabit.com, Amazon’s luxury sale site. The site offers free membership so it shouldn’t be difficult to take advantage of this deal. Full leather construction sits on top of stacked heels, made in Italy with a not-too-round toe. These are a perfect compliment to any man’s wardrobe and especially at this price, should not be passed up.

Annotated justification for spending £985

Now, I’ve been waxing the likes of Visvim for a while now, always in awe of their construction, the quality and overall out-of-this-worldliness of the brand. I’d always be sat in front of a screen or standing in a shop, mouth agape, staring aimlessly at a Visvim piece. For me, it formed the upper echelon of menswear that I’d never be able to touch unless by some miracle I won the lottery, saved up until I was 30 or some twice removed super turned out grandfather knew of me and left them to me in his will.

It wasn’t until recently that I began taking note of the prices of their pieces. Colour me blown aback; my dreams of ever owning any Visvim had been dashed by numbers. It’s no secret that when it comes to Japanese brands you’re paying serious scrilla, but do you ever know for what?  I’m always looking for justification of why I spend the amount of money I do citing things like ‘it’s quality’ or ‘I need it’ (my friend Chloe’s brother, Tim, stated you never ‘need’ something especially clothes). Instead of using shallow reasoning I thought I’d annotate it and present it in the form you see above.

I won’t be spending £985 on boots anytime soon but for anyone who is trying to find some reasoning as to why they’d want to drop at least 2 months rent (shared housing) on footwear - here’s why.

As you can see the Visvim 7 Hole ‘73-Folk is a classically styled boot with rugged construction. For your almost grand you’re obviously going to want something that isn’t going to fall apart the first few times you wear it, so to counteract this they sourced in English (British if you’re privy) cow hide suede and hand sewed it, strengthening the main body. To add to this the Goodyear welt process was used to further reinforce the boot. There’s a lot of techie stuff going on in the bottom of the boot including a Vibram outsole and a TPU heel stabiliser that’ll help maintain the health of your feet (see, these boots have health benefits), in addition to this there’s bamboo shank for shock absorption and a natural cork footbed insert. This is used to allow a memory imprint of your foot to add to the comfort, think memory foam mattresses but for your feet. There is also an EVA midsole. EVA stands for ethylene-vinyl acetate and is used in wakeskating shoes because it ‘will not crack under stress and it is not affected by UV radiation’, a perfect compliment for our very expensive Japanese boots. [x]

Stylistically, these boots have great nuanced detail that from afar don’t seem like much but up close you’ll properly appreciate. Aside from the cow hide suede construction Japanese canvas plays into the look of the boot in the form of panels. Instead of standard length laces Visvim has opted for a double length to allow you to wrap them around the upper part of the Folk’s for style and security. Finally, to put the cherry on top they’ve put in a super cool Riri zip on the inside of each boot that gives access to a further panel when zipped down.

So there you have it. A full feature to justify buying mouth-numbingly expensive boots. If you buy these and someone asks you why, show them this and it should shut them up.
